What is the PSAT / NMSQT?

The PSAT provides a practice for the SAT.

Reading exam 60 minutes
Writing and Language exam 35 minutes
Math exam with no calculator 25 minutes
Math exam with calculator 45 minutes

This test is also the qualifying test for students who wish to participate in the National Merit Scholarship Corporation competition. Several corporations and universities award scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship program.

While the PSAT is technically also a scholarship competition only about 7,000 or less students each year earn scholarship money out of the 1,500,000 students who take the PSAT. We have about 1 student every 2 or 3 years score high enough to earn that type of a score.

Not every school gives money for a high score. One of our past students that scored high on this exam attended the University of Illinois which no longer gives money for a great PSAT score. It is also important to note that if a student is in the top 16,000 out of 1.5 million examinees they will be required to take the SAT in order to continue in the scholarship part of the competition.
